What this task is

Academic Passage is the most demanding Reading task. You read a roughly 200-word excerpt written in academic register — the kind of text you'd meet in a university course — and answer five multiple-choice questions on main idea, detail, inference, and vocabulary in context.

Instant, deterministic grading

All five questions are graded deterministically against the stored answer key for an instant score and explanations, at no LLM cost. There's no penalty beyond a wrong answer counting as incorrect.

Strategy tips

  • Skim for structure first — topic sentence, supporting detail, conclusion — then answer detail questions by returning to the text.
  • Inference questions ask what the passage implies, not what it states; avoid options that go further than the text supports.
  • For vocabulary-in-context, substitute your candidate word back into the sentence to check fit.
  • Manage time: five questions on a dense passage reward a quick first read plus targeted re-reading.
